How to Clean Your Hot Tub Upper & Inner Surface with Muriatic Acid

Ideally, hot tub water should be changed at least once a month. After the draining process, it is recommended that you dilute the muriatic acid with water. It is important to note that when working with any form of acid, you should never add the water to the acid but add the acid to the water.

Once the muriatic acid has been diluted 50/50, be sure to clean it off the surface before refilling the hot tub with water. The fumes and dangers of muriatic acid are extremely high, so be sure to wear eye protection and gloves.

Apply the muriatic acid mixture with a nylon brush and scrub the exterior and interior of the hot tub. Rinse well.

You should always try to keep your hot tub water clear, clean and safe otherwise germs and bacteria can cause problems if left unchecked. Muriatic acid helps to balance your hot tub water by decreasing its total alkalinity and pH levels.

You should first test the hot tub water before adding any acidic properties. This will allow you to get accurate measurements of pH and the levels of alkalinity in your hot tub. We recommend digital test kits when testing.

How Much Muriatic Acid Does Your Hot Tub Need?

When determining the amount of muriatic acid to use, you would first want to know the pH and alkalinity levels, along how many gallons of water does your hot tub usually holds. Once, you have that information the detailed labeling on the muriatic acid should point you in the right direction of exactly how much to add.

If in a rush, you could try pouring the diluted muriatic acid using a 10:1 ratio, directly into the hot tub water. Try using a bucket of hot tub water to dilute the acid, then stir. Remember, always add acid to water and not the other way around. Once mixed properly, you can pour the mixture into the hot tub.
